May 1st, 2016 was a very special day for me. Not only did I start the

Commuter Challenge for the first time but I also participated in the Tour de Fleur. My girlfriends and I decorated our bikes with flowers then took the easy 3 mile bike ride. Prior to our departure, my girlfriends sang “Happy Birthday” to me. You see, May 1st was my 65th birthday…its been quite the ride!

The Commuter Challenge Begins

My husband and I had practiced the route I would take to and from work, a 6 mile one-way trip. The first day was the scariest as I maneuvered east on Rimrock Road and then to 30th Street along the hospital corridor. I was very grateful for the bike lanes and I was impressed how many vehicles gave other bikers and me a little more room to ride when possible. It was exhilarating when I arrived at work safely! I was proud that I was able to accomplish this feat.

Bike/Walk/Bus/Roll to Work Day

20160520_090042Despite a cold and drizzly morning on the south side of Billings, Julia and I were warmly greeted by bikers and walkers on National Bike to Work Day. I was impressed how many people knew about this special day on May 20th, and made an effort to stop by to make themselves a yogurt parfait or grab a muffin and share a story.

I continue to ride my bike to work at RiverStone Health when my schedule allows. I came in second place on my team (a younger athlete took first place, naturally). I will definitely participate again next year when I will be celebrate the double 6’s…and maybe then I will take first place…watch out Daniel!
Ride on…Mary
