Survey results showed that walking continues to be the most popular activity on our trails, followed closely by dog walking. Running, mountain biking, recreation, commuting, scootering, and the use of assisted mobility devices all play an important role in how our community enjoys these shared spaces.

Other notable data included:

  • Decrease in (at least) monthly trail usage: 65%(2023) vs. 55%(2025)
  • Support of (at least) some public funding: 84% development, 75% maintenance
    • However, only 10% of respondents said trails are “not needed”
  • Stagecoach Trail support by age: 93% 18-44 believe the trail must be built or is useful vs. 60% of those aged over 60+
  • 34% of respondents have attended Ales for Trails, most other events are 5% or less
  • 55% use trails (at least) monthly vs. 17% for bike lanes
  • High response rate from people 60+ in West Billings
  • Membership: 75% of respondents have heard of BTN, but only 5.4% are members
    • Many members are also unaware of membership status!

The numbers are a great reminder that trails aren’t just for recreation. They’re places where neighbors connect, families spend time together, people commute, and everyone can enjoy the outdoors in their own way. Click here to read the full report.
