For some people, supporting local trails is about staying active. For others, it’s about connecting with the community. For longtime Billings TrailNet supporter Dr. Gregg Singer, it might have started with something a little different: a good party!

When asked how he first became involved with Billings TrailNet, Dr. Singer joked that it was because we throw good parties! His introduction to the organization came through Ales for Trails, our annual fundraising event that brings the community together to celebrate and support our local trail system. Since then, he has continued to support TrailNet for as long as he can remember.

A Lifetime on Two Wheels

Dr. Singer’s love for cycling goes far beyond the trails here in Billings. In fact, his cycling adventures have taken him around the world!

One of his most impressive cycling accomplishments was biking across the United States in 1978! But his adventures certainly didn’t stop there. Over the years, his love for cycling has taken him all around the world, exploring places like Alaska, Bryce Canyon, Santa Barbara, Idaho, Vietnam, Bosnia, Croatia, Portugal, and Japan.

From scenic mountain trails to routes in other countries, Dr. Singer has experienced just how much cycling can connect people with the world around them.

He also enjoys revisiting some of his favorite destinations. One of his annual traditions is cycling through Yellowstone National Park, where he has to be especially cautious of the bison roaming throughout the park. He even shared a story about having to wait for a passing car so he could ride alongside it, using the vehicle as a buffer between himself and the bison!

His adventures aren’t slowing down anytime soon, either. With an upcoming trip back to New York for his high school reunion, he is also looking forward to cycling in Shenandoah.

And with a brand-new Cannondale bike weighing just 12 pounds, he’s certainly ready for more adventures!

Finding Adventure Close to Home

Although Dr. Singer has biked around the world, he still appreciates the incredible cycling opportunities right here in the Billings area.

Some of his favorite local routes include:

  • Briarwood to Lockwood and back
  • The bike trail out toward Pryor Creek Golf Course
  • The loop from River Road to Duck Creek Road
  • The Molt Loop, starting at Phipps Park

These routes are just a few examples of the opportunities available to cyclists looking to explore the Billings area.

For Dr. Singer, cycling isn’t just about traveling to exciting destinations. It’s also about appreciating the trails and outdoor spaces available right in our own community.

The Health Benefits of Getting Outside

As a doctor, Dr. Singer also recognizes that spending time outdoors offers benefits beyond physical fitness.

He emphasized how beneficial getting outside and using the trails can be for the brain. Whether it’s going for a bike ride, taking a walk, or simply enjoying some fresh air, spending time outdoors can be a great way to support both mental and physical well-being.

His passion for cycling is a reminder that trails are more than just paths connecting different parts of town. They are places where people can clear their minds, stay healthy, explore, and create lasting memories.

Supporting the Trails That Connect Us

Dr. Singer’s story is a wonderful example of how a love for the outdoors can turn into years of community involvement.

From biking across the country in 1978 to exploring trails around the world and continuing to ride right here in Billings, his passion for cycling has remained a constant throughout his life.

We are incredibly grateful for Dr. Singer’s continued support of Billings TrailNet and for the enthusiasm he brings to the cycling community.

And who knows? Maybe the next great cycling adventure starts with attending one of our parties!

Trail Tip: You don’t have to travel across the world to find a great cycling adventure! Try exploring a new local route this week. Whether it’s a short ride or a longer loop, Billings has plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the trails.
