USE THIS HiRoad-LogoIn her last month of service, Billings TrailNet’s Energy Corps member, Elyse (also this article’s author) has been busy giving Take the Hi Road presentations throughout the community. Since July 20, she has given seven presentations to groups of people who drive and people who bike.

Be Courteous 2The presentations are already having an impact in the community. After a one year follow-up presentation to the Optimist Club, one audience member reported that since the last year he had become more aware of bicyclists on the road and made an effort to be a more careful driver.

In addition to sharing information with drivers on how to drive safely when bicyclists are present, Elyse has also spoken with clients at Passages, the Center for Children and Families, k24151177634_4a0f66ae2f_zids attending the summer meals program, and VISTA service members. At Passages, the women shared stories and concerns about biking on the road and learned more about the rules of the road and basic bike maintenance. One woman told us that she bikes more than 10 miles in order to get to her job on the other side of town! The kids at the Center for Children and Families and the lunch program learned that they should stop and look both ways before leaving the sidewalk, what sounds to listen for when riding their bike, and most importantly, how to ring a bike bell.

Billings TrailNet is delighted to be able to reach community members and help to make biking and walking safer for all residents of our city. If you would like a Take the Hi Road presentation at your organization, please contact Billings TrailNet’s Program Coordinator, Wendy Jam, at 281-1244 or by emailing membership@billingstrailnet.org.
