Bicyclists and community members will converge for a vigil on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at 6:45 a.m., one month after James Clark was hit while riding his bicycle.  The memorial is planned to take place at the site where Clark was struck, at the Swords Lane Bypass Trail crossing.

Clark was a four-tour war veteran, husband and father of a 7-year-old son.  According to friends and family, he chose not to own a car and instead, rode a bike for fitness and health.

Clark’s tragic death struck a chord with Kevin Odenthal, one of the organizers of this vigil. “While people are killed every day in a variety of ways, we’re commemorating this day because it could have been any one of us,” he explains.

Odenthal advises those riding bikes to be mindful of their surroundings and ready to react quickly to dangers.  He stresses the importance of wearing reflective clothing, being aware of where drivers expect a bicycle to be and, more importantly, being aware of where drivers do not expect a bicycle to be (like driveways and street crossings).  “Whether we’re in a car or on a bike, our safety hinges on everyone on the road paying attention.  As self-aware commuters, we all need to watch out for each other,” he adds.
