On, February 6, 2014, Senators Mark Begich (D-AK) and Brian Schatz (D-HI) introduced the Safe Streets Act of 2014 (S. 2004), which would require all new federally-funded transportation projects use a Complete Streets approach to planning, designing and building roads.  This bill requires each state, or state department of transportation to accommodate the needs of pedestrians and cyclists on new federally funded transportation projects.

Among other policies for safe pedestrian and bike travel, the bill also requires that Complete Streets policies be adopted as policies or principles that ensure that safety is considered in project planning and development for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, those using public transportation, children and older people.

You can read the full bill here.  If you are interested in contacting your senators to support this bill, an easy-to-use support letter is available on the League of American Bicyclist web page, here.
