The goal of the Bike Repair Clinic is to ensure the bikes children are riding are safe and in good riding condition. Bicycle mechanics and Billings TrailNet volunteers will be on site to help the children with their bikes and educate children on safe bicycling and walking practices.

The mechanics will be replacing flat tires, adjusting seats and handle bars, and properly fitting bikes and helmets. This event is being coordinated through the AmeriCorps VISTA project “Alternative Modes Outreach and Education,” created to give children and their families non-motorized transportation options and opportunities.

The project is a cooperative effort between the City-County Planning Division and Sandstone Elementary School. The project goal is to foster a culture where non-motorized transportation becomes the norm for students to get to and from school, and travel safely around the community.

More Bike Trailer events will take place around the community in the coming months. To schedule a bike trailer at your student’s school, please contact the AmeriCorps VISTA project at plnvista2@ci.billings.mt.us or call 406-237-6277.

Active modes of transportation are beneficial in more ways than one. By relying less on the automobile, families will save money and help the environment, while improving their health. Allowing children to walk and bike builds a sense of independence and confidence within the individual as well as strengthening the culture of the community.

Billings TrailNet is proud to be a partner in this endeavor. To volunteer as a Bike Trailer mechanic, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Nancy Hillman at volunteers@billingstrailnet.org.
