As a way to begin focusing more attention on pedestrians, we are going to begin counting people walking downtown and we need your help to make it successful. Why count pedestrians?
There is a saying in transportation planning, “if it gets counted, it matters.” By counting pedestrians we will put attention toward those who are walking and collect valuable data to be used locally and uploaded nationally to the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project. Having these numbers can help justify, locally, engineering treatments to better facilitate those who are walking. The data will be used in the national database to create more precise transportation models that include people walking.
Why downtown?
Many people have discussed the need to address pedestrian crashes in the downtown area and it has the highest concentration of people who are walking. For those reasons, we are going to begin are pedestrian counting in the center of the city at a minimum of five locations.
