With temperatures expected to climb into the triple digits this weekend, spending time outdoors may require a little extra planning. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay inside. Billings’ trails are still a great place to walk, run, or bike as long as you take a few precautions to stay safe in the summer heat.
Go Early or Go Late
The coolest hours of the day are typically early in the morning or later in the evening. If you’re planning a walk or bike ride, consider heading out before the afternoon heat arrives. Not only will temperatures be more comfortable, but you’ll likely enjoy quieter trails and beautiful Montana sunrises or sunsets.
Shorter Adventures Can Be Just as Rewarding
Extreme heat isn’t the time to tackle your longest ride or hike. Instead, choose a shorter route, take breaks in shaded areas when possible, and listen to your body. There’s nothing wrong with turning around early if the heat becomes too much.
Remember, the goal is to enjoy the trails, not push through unsafe conditions.
Don’t Forget Your Four-Legged Friends
If you’re bringing your dog along, remember that pavement and sidewalks heat up much faster than the air temperature. If it’s too hot for the back of your hand, it’s likely too hot for your dog’s paws.
Bring extra water for your pet, watch for signs of overheating, and consider saving longer walks for the cooler parts of the day.
Make Safety Part of the Adventure
Before heading out, pack a reusable water bottle, wear lightweight clothing, apply sunscreen, and let someone know where you’re going if you’re planning a longer ride. Even experienced trail users can be affected by extreme heat, so it’s always better to be prepared.
By making a few simple adjustments, you can continue enjoying everything Billings’ trail system has to offer while staying safe during this weekend’s record-breaking temperatures.
Looking Ahead: Ales for Trails
As summer continues, don’t forget to mark your calendar for Ales for Trails! This annual TrailNet fundraiser is a fun way to support local trails while enjoying an evening with friends and fellow outdoor enthusiasts. We’ll be sharing more details as the event gets closer.
Trail Tip of the Week
Hydrate before you’re thirsty. Start drinking water before you hit the trail, bring more than you think you’ll need, and take regular sips throughout your walk or ride. Staying hydrated is one of the easiest and most important ways to enjoy the trails safely during hot summer weather.
