Billings’ trail system didn’t just appear overnight. It was the result of a powerful vision, years of collaboration, and a passionate community determined to create safer, more connected outdoor spaces.
BikeNet was created as a plan to improve quality of life in Billings by making the community more inviting and accessible for cyclists and pedestrians. Its goal was simple but ambitious: enhance transportation options, recreation opportunities, and access to community resources while preserving the natural environment.
A Community-Driven Vision
BikeNet began under the leadership of the Yellowstone County Planning Board, with support from the Federal Highway Administration. What made the plan special was its strong emphasis on community involvement. Local residents participated in workshops, public meetings, and discussions that helped shape the future of Billings’ trails.
This collaboration included city planners, engineers, landscape architects, public officials, and everyday citizens, all working together toward a shared goal of improving Billings for future generations.

Turning Plans Into Reality
Over time, BikeNet evolved from an idea into action. Several major accomplishments helped establish the trail system we know today:
- Key trail segments like the Kiwanis Trail and Metra Trail were constructed.
- Landscaping and trail improvements enhanced safety and usability.
- Billings secured grants, federal funding, and local support to expand trail access.
- Community organizations, volunteers, and local leaders worked together to promote trail development.
These efforts ensured trails weren’t just recreational spaces, but essential connections between neighborhoods, parks, and community spaces.
Community Support Made the Difference
BikeNet’s success was fueled by passionate supporters. Fundraisers, grants, and local partnerships helped bring trail projects to life. Organizations like the Yellowstone River Parks Association, Montana Community Foundation, and local volunteers played a key role in advancing trail development.
Even educational presentations and public outreach helped build awareness and support, ensuring that residents understood the importance of investing in Billings’ trail system.
A lasting Legacy
By the early 2000s, BikeNet had helped establish the foundation for Billings’ growing trail network. New projects continued expanding connections throughout the city, linking neighborhoods, parks, and scenic areas.
The BikeNet plan eventually evolved into the Heritage Trail Plan, continuing the mission of improving access, promoting recreation, and strengthening community connections.
Looking Ahead
Today, Billings TrailNet carries forward that original vision, creating safer, more accessible trails and encouraging active transportation throughout the city.
Every time you walk, bike, or explore a Billings trail, you’re benefiting from decades of planning, passion, and community dedication.
And this is just the beginning.
