For IMEG’s Kolten Knatterud (pictured above), involvement with Billings TrailNet began with his professional world. As a Professional Engineer (PE) working in transportation and infrastructure, he routinely collaborates on projects that shape how communities move. Serving on the Billings Chamber of Commerce Trails Committee—and later chairing it—brought him even closer to the work of trail planning and advocacy. That connection soon grew into joining the Billings TrailNet Board of Directors, and even today he continues to lend his expertise to strengthen our trail network and advance public infrastructure in Billings.

Throughout his time on the board, Kolten has watched Billings TrailNet evolve. Staff capacity has grown, committees have taken on increasing responsibility, and the organization has celebrated the completion of numerous designed and constructed trail projects. (Read how things have changed since 2019 in this blog post!) From the Skyline Trail to developing a feasibility study on the Yellowjacket Trail, to partnering with HDR on the Stagecoach Trail, Kolten sees trails as a vital component of Billings’ future. He notes that Complete Streets will continue driving demand for safe, connected routes, ensuring that new trail opportunities “won’t be going away.”

Beyond the professional side, trails matter personally. His young children love riding and exploring places like the Skyline Trail and the Shiloh Conservation Area, as well as Riverfront Park. His company’s employees rely on these trails too, and he recognizes how much they contribute to recruitment, retention, and overall quality of life. As a long-time corporate member, Ales for Trails supporter, and volunteer, Kolten values the opportunity to connect with people and give back. “We appreciate having this in our community,” he says. “And we’re proud to support Billings TrailNet however we can.”
