I have had the honor of serving as the Executive Director of Billings TrailNet since November 1, 2012. What a privilege to work alongside dedicated Billings TrailNet staff, board members, generous donors, and committed volunteers!

If ever I questioned why I was working so hard, a simple ride on a trail would often result in an encounter with a trail user who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the trails.

Each of us comprises a community that believes deeply in the power of trails to transform lives.

Together, we have built far more than pathways on a map: we’ve built connection—between neighborhoods, between people, and between Billings and the outdoors that make this place feel like home. You have helped create a healthier, more vibrant, more welcoming city. Our trail system has become one of our region’s greatest assets, and it exists because you invested your time, your energy, and your resources.

After more than a decade in this role, I have decided to retire as Executive Director once our next leader is hired. This is both a bittersweet and hopeful moment for me. Billings TrailNet is stronger than it has ever been, with a capable staff, stable governance, enthusiastic community support, and a clear vision for the future.

Our board is now beginning the search for someone who is just as enthusiastic about trails, active transportation, and community-building as you are—someone who can lead the organization forward with energy and fresh ideas.

If you or someone you know would be interested in the job, please see the job opportuity here and then send me your cover letter and resume to share with our search committee.

And… I have promised to stay on in a part-time role as a Major Gifts Officer, doing what I do best: meeting people and fundraising.

I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished together:

    • We strengthened partnerships with the city, local businesses, health organizations, and civic groups.
    • We elevated trails as a key issue in local elections and council discussions.
    • We secured funding for miles of new trail connections and improvements.
    • We’ve donated almost $1 million to help build our more than 55 miles of trails.
    • We were a major part of building the city’s crown jewel: the Skyline Trail!
    • We’ve hosted the Best Party in Billings since 2001, and brought the community together to celebrate- at Ales for Trails.
    • We created events like the Tour de Fleur, the Downtown Bike Roll and bike movies at the Art House that celebrate community and inspire people to get moving.
    • We helped Billings become a healthier, more active, more connected community.

These successes are yours as much as mine. You—our members and donors—made them possible.

Transitions open the door to possibility. Billings TrailNet’s future is bright, and with the continued support of members like you, the next decade can be even more transformative than the last. I am committed to ensuring a smooth and positive transition for our new Executive Director, and I hope you will embrace and encourage the person who steps into this role.

Warmly,

Kristi Drake
