This summer, Billings TrailNet was thrilled to join the Hiking Hounds program through Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter. We particpated in both the June and July outings, and are gearing up for both upcoming hikes on August 31 and September 28—with a possible bonus hike in October if the weather holds out!
Hiking Hounds is a unique way to get outdoors while giving back. Participants meet at the shelter on the last Sunday of every month, then carpool with the pups to a different trailhead each month. YVAS provides crates for safe transport, leashes, collapsible water bowls, and of course, a canine companion for the hike. Hikers just need to bring sturdy shoes, plenty of water, and a little spirit. It’s a rewarding way to give shelter dogs some much-needed exercise, socialization, and fresh air.
Not to mention, all of the dogs were adopted within a few weeks of each hike!
Billings TrailNet is proud to support this program, which connects people, dogs, and trails.

By making the outdoors accessible for everyone—including our four-legged friends—Hiking Hounds reflects our mission of building healthier, more inclusive communities. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or new to the trails, this program is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Montana’s great outdoors while helping a dog in need. We can’t wait to see you at the next outing!
