Cycling infrastructure improvements abound in Billings!

Thanks to Ennis-Flint and High Mark Traffic Services, the intersection of 32nd Street and Central Avenue now has new and improved signage for cyclists. The green sharrow, or “shared lane panel,” consisting of a bright green box with upward arrow markings above and a bicycle below will alert motorists of cyclists’ use of the road.

32nd St Green Box

While bike lanes exist on 32nd north and south of the sharrow marking, the narrow pavement near the Altana Federal Credit Union meant that there was no room for the lane to continue through this busy intersection. In order to improve connectivity and not leave cyclists high and dry, 32nd Street became the first road in Billings receive a sharrow markings.

After significant wear and tear from the cold and snowy Billings winters, the original white paint wore off the road. As successor to the white paint, the green paint will allow provide increased visibility to drivers and cyclists alike. The high-tech paint is also slip resistant to allow cyclists better traction in inclement weather.

The city welcomes feedback on the new markings. If you would like to share your thoughts or concerns, please contact the Bicycle and Pedestrian coordinator at  406-247-8637.
