EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Reports to: Board of Directors
Supervises: all Billings TrailNet staff
Position Summary
The Executive Director provides strategic, operational, and advocacy leadership for Billings TrailNet. This position is responsible for guiding the organization toward its mission of building a complete, community-wide trail system by managing staff, advancing policy and partnerships, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and maintaining alignment with the board’s goals and community priorities.
The Executive Director focuses on organizational growth, community engagement, and internal management and fundraising.
Primary Responsibilities
Leadership & Management
- Lead implementation of the board’s strategic plan, aligning staff toward clear goals.
- Supervise all staff and contractors, ensuring clear scope of work and measurable benchmarks.
- Conduct quarterly staff reviews and facilitate quarterly goal alignment meetings
- Complete annual written performance evaluation of staff and salary update.
- Maintain an inclusive, positive organizational culture emphasizing collaboration, communication, and community impact.
Finance & Compliance
- Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors; prepare reports, strategic updates, and annual budgets.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial best practices and ethical fundraising standards.
- Oversee budget preparation, grant compliance, and fiscal accountability.
Advocacy & External Relations
- Represent Billings TrailNet with City of Billings departments, elected officials, and state agencies (MDT, Yellowstone County, etc.).
- Cultivate core partnerships that directly impact trail development, advocacy, and funding.
- Act as the public face of the organization.
- Ensure there is Billings TrailNet presence at relevant events, media engagements, and community forums.
Fundraising & Development Leadership
- Oversee the organization’s overall development strategy.
- Collaborate with the Development & Marketing Manager on fundraising campaigns, sponsorships, and donor communication.
- Oversee communication with major donors.
Program & Event Oversight
- Ensure staff and committee events align with mission and return on investment.
- Oversee Ales for Trails, Membership Appreciation Event, and other Billings TrailNet events at a strategic level.
Key Performance Indicators
For each of the responsibilities listed above, the Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Board of Directors to establish measurable performance indicators.
