Do you know what BikeNet does? Our mission is to promote a complete, community-wide trail system. This is our 14th year in raising money to build trails. Plus, we promote active transportation through advocacy, events, and information. Do you think the name BikeNet adequately represents what we do? How many people walk or run on the trails, and do they know BikeNet is behind much of the mileage they enjoy?
BikeNet is reaching out to the public to invite you to contribute to a discussion on changing our name. This is just the first step in an evaluation process and we have by no means commenced a re-branding process– we are merely brainstorming and encouraging the community to stay in touch with us about this important decision.
To give you some background about how we got to this point…the idea of a name change surfaced several years ago and gained momentum last spring during our Board of Directors Strategic Planning Retreat. With last year being the first full year for our Executive Director, we didn’t feel that was an appropriate time to address the concerns. However, now that a year has passed, the name change topic has resurfaced. We recently conducted a blind survey of our Board of Directors to try to get some concrete data to support this evolution. The results of that survey are as follows (we asked four questions actually but the fourth question related to some alternative names that our Communications Committee had discussed):
Do you feel the name BikeNet properly defines our organization and our promotion of a complete, community-wide trail system?
o Yes – 3 votes
o No – 10 votes
Would you support a rebranding effort if a group decision was made to change our name?
o Yes – 9 votes
o No – 4 votes
If BikeNet’s name were to change, do you think the logo should change as well?
o Yes – 6 votes
o No – 7 votes
You can give your input here and suggest a new name: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PSP753Y
We would greatly appreciate your perspective on this matter. We invite you to join us, to think outside of the box, to think within the box, just to participate and speak up if you feel strongly about something.
This is an exciting and challenging time and we’re hopeful we can lean on community-minded people like you to help us make it happen.
Thank you,
Patrick Parker
